How to Clear a Jammed Nail Gun: How to Unjam a Nail Gun

Owning a powerful tool like a nail gun can make your work life hustle free and gives you ample time to finish you’re nailing easily. But owning a nail gun comes with maintenance issues too.  Like any other power tool, it needs regular maintenance to perform accurately.

Without it, your nail gun can jam easily and cause frustration by hampering your project. Taking professional help every time to unjam your nail gun can be a costly and time-consuming process. Step-1: Safety First

Safety is mandatory when it comes to unjamming a jammed nail gain. It can cause serious injury by misfiring at any time. So, taking necessary safety precautions is a must.  You need to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying nails. Along with the goggles you need a pair of heavy duty gloves to protect your hands from nails too. 

Step-2: Placing the Gun Properly

Your nail gun should never face your body parts when you are unjamming it. Make sure you point the nail gun from your body and place it in an upright position. In no circumstances it should point towards any one.

Step-3: Disconnect All Power Sources And Nail Cartridges. 

Disconnect all types of power sources from the gun. Depending on your nail gun it may vary. If your nail gun is a corded one then unplug the cord. If it uses a battery or Fuel cell as a power source then remove them. For a pneumatic gun, empty the compress gas cylinder properly. Pull the trigger a few times to make sure that no air is trapped within the nail gun. Connection to power can misfire the gun and cause serious injury. Remove the nail magazine or cartridges with all the nails from the gun too. 

Step-4: Opening the Barrel

In this step, you need to open the nail gun barrel of your gun. You can do it by using the release switch. Using this will easily release the jammed nails which were stuck inside. This release switch is available in all modern guns. Having this usually lets you finish the unjamming process right there. If this is not available in your nail gun then you should very carefully check the barrel to find if the nail is stuck there. Then open the nose bolts which are placed in front of the nailer. This will allow you to release the nose from the gun and remove the jammed nails. 

Step-5: Proper Inspection

Inspect your nail gun barrel properly and find the cause from the jam. In this inspection check the following things-

  • Check the nail magazine for any blockage.
  • Check the general direction of the pins as a pin-loaded in the reverse direction can jam the nail gun.
  • Check the driver blade if it rests properly. 
  • Check for any broken part or mechanical jam. 

These checks are done because your nail gun jam for various reasons. So it is always a good idea to check all these. After all these steps you can proceed for the next step to remove the stuck nail.

Step-6: Remove the Nails

Remove the jammed nails with the help of needle-nose pliers. To remove them you can simply push or pull them or twist them too. Be careful and patient as it may take some time. So remove the nails with utmost care and patience. You can use a bit of oil too to unjam them. Make sure you use the right oil to do it. 

Step-7: Close the Gun and Try It

This the last Step.  After removing the jammed nails properly close the gun in proper order.  Refill your nail gun properly and make sure all the nails are facing in the right direction.  Connect the power source and fire the gun for several times. 

Be cautious for the first few fires and make sure the gun is a safe distance away from you when firing.  If your gun does not fire properly then immediately disconnect the power source and inspect again. You should patiently follow the steps again until your nail gun is ok. 

Unjamming a nail gun is a real easy job and it takes a few moments only. But you have to remain cautious as any misfire may cause serious injury. Always try to maintain the necessary safety measures needed as specified above. Read the manufacturer guide properly too for a smooth and easy process. When it is done properly with necessary safety and precautions, there is little risk of injury and you can maintain your nail gun with ease.
